“…Contrary to expectation and earlier studies that many HIV patients presented late or at advance state, less (24 patients) were seen in this study (Ajayi et al 2009). The advanced stage of HIV infection manifested in patients at WHO staging III and IV with pre-treatment average CD4 count of 247 cell/µL and 158 cell/µL respectively.…”

“…The difference is statistically significant (p<0.001). This finding is in keeping with reports of HIV incidence in Nigeria (Nwokedi et al, 2007;Ajayi et al, 2009Ajayi et al, , 2011 and outside the country (UAC., 2003; Kilaru et al, 2004). Persons in the age range 20-50 might be predisposed because they represent the reproductive and productive age group of any society and thus sexually active.…”

The reasons for this might be that the females attain sexual maturity earlier than the males and are likely to engage in sexual practices earlier than the male counterpart.…”

“…5 Although numerous complications occur in HIVinfected patients, 2 6 7 the most common haematological abnormalities are anaemia and neutropenia. 6 Anaemia and neutropenia are generally caused by inadequate blood cell production because of bone marrow suppression by HIV infection mediated by abnormal cytokine expression and alteration of the bone marrow microenvironment. 5 8 Anaemia in HIV-infected persons is associated with CD4 cell depletion and progression to AIDS 9 and is one of the strongest predictors of HIV mortality and poor responses to antiretroviral therapy (ART).…”
