CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray Disc Diffraction with a Laser Ray Box

Abstract: A compact disc (CD) can be used as a diffraction grating, even though its track consists of a series of pits, not a continuous groove. Previous authors described how to measure the track spacing on a CD using an incident laser beam normal to the surface or one at an oblique angle. In both cases, the diffraction pattern was projected on a screen and distance measurements allowed the track spacing to be calculated. I propose an alternative method using a laser ray box, which is also applied to a DVD and a Blu-ra… Show more

“…3). 13,14 While it is possible to use the grating both in reflection and transmission, we asked the students to work in transmission alone for safety reasons (in order to avoid laser question we are confronted with is therefore how to "reduce" the acceleration so that it becomes feasible to measure.…”

“…Using compact disks as diffraction gratings to perform diffraction experiments by multiple slits is very well-known and has been previously described by many authors (see, for example, [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]). It was also recently tested as a home-lab experiment during the lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic [14].…”

“…However, the mechanism of the detector allows a much faster automatic calibration using an optical grating. A simple compact disc (CD) can be used as an optical grating [21] to keep costs low, see figure 6. We remove all non-transparent layers, including the reflecting layer from the CD using cellotape.…”
