Caveats for the Use of Suspension Sutures

Abstract: Suspension sutures may be considered a method for elevating ptotic tissue. This method often uses a limited access incision, and commonly is used in cosmetic surgery. The caveats for the technique are not well described. This article describes eight caveats for successful suture suspension. A method for performing this procedure with a spinal needle is described, using the lateral eyebrow as an example.

“…To counteract the descent and laxity of the tissues, this procedure entails the passage of sutures under the skin of the face and neck. It avoids large incisions, significant undermining, or substantial recovery time 6,16 . Although there has been substantial mention in the popular press, little information exists in the plastic surgical or dermatologic literature regarding the safety, efficacy, longevity, or complications of these suspension procedures 6 .…”

“…It avoids large incisions, significant undermining, or substantial recovery time. 6,16 Although there has been substantial mention in the popular press, little information exists in the plastic surgical or dermatologic literature regarding the safety, efficacy, longevity, or complications of these suspension procedures. 6 The present review aims to evaluate several clinical parameters pertaining to thread suspensions: the clinical efficacy and longevity of results of various types of polypropylene barbed suture; the in vivo safety of permanently implanted barbed suture; and the risk of serious adverse events associated with such sutures.…”

“…The principle is surprisingly simple and will be described in more detail [2]. However, there are many small tips and I found a rather steep "learning curve" in developing this procedure.…”
