CATS: GPS coordinate time series analysis software

Abstract: Over the last 10 years, several papers have established that daily estimates of GPS coordinates are temporally correlated and it is therefore incorrect to assume that the observations are independent when estimating parameters from them. A direct consequence of this assumption is the over-optimistic estimation of the parameter uncertainties. Perhaps the perceived computational burden or the lack of suitable software for time series analysis has resulted in many heuristic methods being proposed in the scientifi… Show more

“…The AM data in Figures 3a and 3b are irregularly spaced in time, so it is difficult to estimate and use a colored noise model in the trend estimation using public-domain software such as CATS [Williams, 2008] since it expects regularly spaced data, albeit with gaps permitted. However, since no groundwater depth measurements were made more than once per day, we can assume that the measurement interval was daily and that the AM time series have many large gaps throughout.…”

“…Prior the estimation of the velocity field, certain outliers were eliminated from the time series using a specific threshold based on the deviation of each station. To obtain the absolute velocity field of the Balearic Islands, the time series were included in CATS GPS coordinate time series analysis software, which uses a maximum likelihood estimation to fit a multi-parameter model (Williams, 2008). To develop the best adjustment, periodicity parameters were also considered.…”
