Traditional dyeing process of cotton has caused a large amount of wastewater with high salt content, which seriously damages the ecological environment. In this work, cotton fabric was modified with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride in order to decrease the electrostatic repulsion with the anionic dyes. A systematic optimization of the process has been performed. The acid dyes were applied instead of the common reactive dyes to dye the modified fabrics. The advantage of the high dye-uptake of acid dyes is studied. The levelness of the fabric dyed by reactive dyes and acid dyes were compared. The adsorption process and the bindings between the modified fabric and anionic acid dyes were further explored. The dyeing process were optimized. Finally, the dye-uptake of the modified fabric dyed by optimized conditions achieves to about 92%, which is comparable to traditional cotton dyeing process.

Heparin is a widely applied anticoagulant agent. However, in clinical practice, it is of vital importance to reverse its anticoagulant effect to restore the blood-clotting cascade and circumvent side effects. Inspired by protein cages that can encapsulate and protect their cargo from surroundings, we utilize three designed protein copolymers to sequester heparin into inert nanoparticles. In our design, a silk-like sequence provides cooperativity between proteins, generating a multivalency effect that enhances the heparin-binding ability. Protein copolymers complex heparin into well-defined nanoparticles with diameters below 200 nm. We also develop a competitive fluorescent switchon assay for heparin detection, with a detection limit of 0.01 IU mL −1 in plasma that is significantly below the therapeutic range (0.2−8 IU mL −1 ). Moreover, moderate cytocompatibility is demonstrated by in vitro cell studies. Therefore, such engineered protein copolymers present a promising alternative for neutralizing and sensing heparin, but further optimization is required for in vivo applications.

Due to increasing public concern over hygiene, there have been many studies investigating antimicrobial and antiviral agents recently. With the aim of developing biobased virucidal/virus capture agents, we report a chemical modification of the cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) surface with poly(2-dimethylamino) ethyl acrylate) methyl chloride quaternary salt (Q-PDMAEA) to introduce the positively charged functional groups. The surface of CNCs was modified through direct and indirect graft polymerization. Subsequently, the direct and indirect cationization effect on the degree of functionalization, thermal stability, crystallinity, and antiviral activity of CNCs was investigated. Indirect cationization produced the highest degree of polymer grafting, increasing particle size and thermal stability. Further, the modified CNCs were tested for their ability to capture nonenveloped bacteriophages PhiX174 (ΦX174) and MS2. We observed a significant (>4.19 log 10 ) reduction in total viral load by specific functionalized CNCs. However, the activity depended on the structure of functional groups, surface charge density, and the type of virus under study. Overall, the direct and indirect cationization of CNC leads to biobased agents with immobilized cationic charge, with good virus capture activity. Such agents can be used for various applications including textiles, packaging, wastewater treatment, etc.
