Cathodic deposition of interlaced nanosheet-like cobalt sulfide films for high-performance supercapacitors

Abstract: In this study, an interlaced nanosheet-like cobalt sulfide (CoS) electroactive material was deposited on a Ni foam substrate using a facile and efficient electrochemical route and employed as a high-performance supercapacitor for the first time. An impressive specific capacitance, as high as 1471 F g 21 at 4 A g 21 , was achieved for the interlaced nanosheet-like CoS electroactive material in 1.0 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. It delivered a remarkable specific capacitance of up to 1306 F g 21 even at a high charg… Show more

“…5a shows the Co 2p XPS spectrum exhibiting the well separated spin-orbit components Co 2p3/2 and Co 2p1/2. In particular, the Co 2p3/2 peak is characterized by a dominant contribution at 781 eV assigned to CoS formation as well as a broad peak at higher binding energies (about 787 eV) that can also be originated from a shake-up satellite of CoS, both indicating that that the Co ion was in the form of the Co 2+ state [41]. In addition, very little amount of the metallic Co at 778.5 eV exists.…”

“…Furthermore, the shape of the CV curves demonstrates that the pseudocapacitance characteristic of CoS-modified electrode is distant from that of EDLC, whose CV curve is similar to an ideal rectangle [27]. According to the literature [18,28], two redox reactions of the CoS electrode in KOH electrolytes are expressed as follows:…”

“…For instance, CoS microspheres [17] are produced in mixed solvents through benign hydrothermal route. CoS nanosheets [18] electrochemically deposited on nickel foam could exhibit a high specific capacitance of 1471 F·g −1 at 4 A·g −1 in 1 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. Hollow CoS nanoprisms [19] have been prepared by a two-step and microwave-assisted method.…”

“…So far, there are only a few reports dedicated to metal sulfides nanoarrays directly on conductive substrates for high‐rate battery/supercapacitor application. Lin and Chou reported an electro‐deposited nanosheet‐like CoS film via thiourea and its pseudo‐capacitive performance . However, their cycling test was conducted only for 1000 cycles and no full cell was demonstrated.…”
