Catenanes: Fifty Years of Molecular Links

Abstract: Half a century after Schill and Lüttringhaus carried out the first directed synthesis of a [2]catenane, a plethora of strategies now exist for the construction of molecular Hopf links (singly interlocked rings), the simplest type of catenane. The precision and effectiveness with which suitable templates and/or noncovalent interactions can arrange building blocks has also enabled the synthesis of intricate and often beautiful higher order interlocked systems, including Solomon links, Borromean rings, and a Star… Show more

“…Nowadays, aside from the mathematical perspective, the pursuit of topology has evolved into prominent themes in the physical and biological sciences 2,3 . However, the synthesis of topologically interesting molecules is still very challenging, both intellectually and technically [4][5][6] . In fact, the successful design and construction of topological structures at such small dimensions necessitates the controllable generation of nodes (or crossovers) in the precise position (how they are linked) and with the correct handedness (positive or negative).…”

“…Catenanes are mechanically interlocked molecules and can be constructed from small organic molecules 12 as well as biopolymers, both natural 39 and engineered. 1013 The central challenge of synthesizing any catenane structure is establishing the threading between the catenated rings.…”
