Catch‐up through Collaborative Innovation: Evidence from China

Abstract: Collaborative innovation has received the attention of management scholars for decades. The primary focus of our research is to explore the mechanisms that drive innovation catch‐up of latecomers in an emerging economy through research and development collaborations (i.e., academic and industrial collaborations). Using a sample of 1,066 firms in a high‐tech cluster in China, we find that collaborative innovation strategy has an inverse U–shaped effect on a firm's innovation performance. In addition, the relati… Show more

“…When firms collaborate with each other, the risks of knowledge leakage are high and consequently firms are reluctant to share their core knowledge. When the government can provide a sound law system and effective intellectual property protection policies, opportunistic behavior will be reduced and the trust between firms and their partners will be enhanced (Liu et al, 2017), and then the efficiency of knowledge transfer will also be enhanced. Therefore, the relationship will be stronger when government institutional support is high than when it is low.…”

“…Network relations help to reduce uncertainty and enhance the learning of firms, as well as trust building. For example, Liu, Ying, and Wu () find an inverse U–shaped relationship between academic or industrial collaboration intensity and innovation performance for Chinese firms. Interorganizational flows of knowledge within and across regions is also a source of value creation and promotes regional growth (Huggins & Thompson, ).…”

“…Firms in emerging market are known to suffer from the liabilities of newness, smallness and foreignness (Zaheer, 1995). Developments in external knowledge search research suggest that firms in emerging market eager to enter the international market can rely on network advantage to overcome these challenges (Liu et al , 2017). Indeed, external knowledge search has played so important role in internationalization that when firms underestimate such searching process they are considered to fall into a disadvantage situation (Johanson and Vahlne, 2009; Liu and Wei, 2013).…”
