Catalytic Removal of Toluene in Air over Co–Mn–Al Nano-oxides Synthesized by Hydrotalcite Route

Abstract: Co-Mn-Al hydrotalcite type solids were synthesized as precursors of catalysts for the total oxidation of toluene in air. For the as-prepared solids, XRD measurements indicate the coexistence of hydrotalcite and MnCO 3 phases. When calcination is performed at 500°C, different mixed oxides are found as a function of Co:Mn molar ratio and preparation method, and very high specific surface areas were obtained for the Co-Mn solids. The comparison of catalytic activities in the presence of calcined hydrotalcites wit… Show more

“…In addition, a CoMnO 3 phase of the rhombohedral ilmenitetype can be identified [34]. This rhombohedral phase is known to coexist with cubic and tetragonal Co-Mn oxides and may originate from the formation of Mn 4+ cations during calcination [21,25]. The Co-free Co0Mn3 catalyst probably consists of a tetragonal MnMn 2 O 4 spinel with additional Mg 2+ and Al 3+ ions in the lattice.…”

“…For example, Rao et al [19] synthesized CNTs from methane over reduced Mg 1-x Co x Al 2 O 4 (x = 0.1 -0.4) spinel catalysts with high yields and superior qualities. Co-and Mn-based mixed oxides were used in various catalytic reactions, such as the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis [20][21][22], the decomposition of nitrous oxide [23,24], and the oxidation of volatile organic compounds [25]. As an effective promoter, Mn can significantly enhance the performance of Co catalysts.…”

“…According to the XRD and Raman results, the predominant phase in the ACCoMn and CPCoMn oxides corresponds to the Mn3O4 phase, which is reduced to MnO at approximately 490 °C [24]. Figure 6 shows that this reduction process occurs at 480 and 450 °C for ACCoMn and CPCoMn, respectively, indicating that a lower temperature is required to carry out the Mn3O4 reduction in the solid synthesized by co-precipitation (CPCoMn).…”

“…The layers contain metal cations of at least two different oxidation states [13,14]. Indeed, after calcination treatment, mixed oxides are formed and possess unique properties like high specific surface area and porosity, good thermal stability, good mixed oxides homogeneity basic properties and high metal dispersion [15][16][17][18][19]. The partial or total substitution of Mg 2+ and Al…”
