“…This has enabled us to determine if populations differ in the relative abundance of large and small individuals and whether there is any evidence of bimodality in size, both of which might be suggestive of a possible subspecies. Following the recent taxonomical and faunistic overviews of European beetle fauna (Bartolozzi & Sprecher‐Uebersax, 2006), there are five European taxa of the genus Lucanus: L. cervus cervus (Linnaeus, 1758) with a wide distribution in Europe, L. cervus turcicus (Sturm, 1843) found in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece, L . ibericus (Motschulsky, 1845) in South‐eastern Europe (Albania, Greece, Turkey, Ukraine), L. tetraodon (Thunberg, 1806) in France, Italy, Albania, and Greece, and L. ( Pseudolucanus) barbarossa (Fabricius, 1801) in Spain and Portugal.…”
