Although there are fertilization recommendations for the cultivation of zucchini, there are just few researches about the effects of nutrients in seed production. Calcium and boron have a low mobility in plants, and some researches recommend foliar application for these nutrients. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the foliar application of calcium and boron in the production and quality of zucchini seeds. The experimental design was randomized blocks with seven replications. Four treatments were evaluated: only calcium (0.2%) application, only boron (0.1%) application, combined application of calcium (0.2%) and boron (0.1%) and the control (without calcium and boron.) The following characteristics were evaluated: number of pollen grains per flower, hundred seeds weight; seed number and weight per fruit and seed physiological quality (germination; first germination count and speed of germination index -SGI). Only boron application reduced the number of seeds produced per fruit. The combined foliar application of calcium and boron, in addition to reducing the number of seeds, also reduced SGI. The calcium only application increased the amount of pollen per flower (superior to all other treatments) and also the number of seeds per fruit (compared to the combined application of calcium + boron), without affecting the quality of the zucchini seeds. So, it can be recomended the aplication of Ca during zucchini flowering for seed production.

Aims: This study evaluates the effects of top dressing sulfur (S) fertilization, with and without organic compost before planting, on radish seed production and quality. Study Design: Eight treatments were studied in a factorial scheme (4 x 2): four S doses in top dressing fertilization (0, 60, 120, 180 kg ha-1 of S), with or without organic compost (50 t ha-1) in fertilization before seeding. Place and Duration of the Study: The experiment was carried out in the São Manuel Experimental Farm (22°46’ South, 48°34’ West, 740 m above sea level) in the School of Agriculture (FCA) of the Sao Paulo State University (UNESP) located in São Manuel, SP, Brazil. Radish sown happened in April, and harvest and seed analysis occurred in October 2017. Methodology: Radish seeds were manually harvested (188 days after being sown), cleaned, and dried. Evaluations of seed production per plant, weight of 1000 seeds, and seed quality (germination (%), germination first count, germination speed index, and dry weight of normal seedlings) were performed. Results: Applying organic compost increased radish seed production and the weight of 1000 seeds. Where no organic compost was applied, the higher the S dose, the greater the seed production per plant. With organic compost fertilization, the highest seed production and the weight of 1000 seeds were obtained with top dressing fertilization with 68 kg ha-1 of S. Germination and germination speed index were not affected by either factor, organic compost fertilization or S dose. Where no organic compost was applied, the higher the S dose, the lower the leachate level in the electrical conductivity test. Conclusion: The radish base fertilization with organic compost plus top dressing S fertilization (68 kg ha-1) is indicated for radish seed production.

Chives are one of the most popular spice plants in world cuisine. It is usually produced by small producers, often in an organic farming system. However, research with chives in this production system is lacking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the production of chives with the use of organic fertilizers before planting and in top dressing. Seven treatments were evaluated, resulting from the factorial 2x3+1, with two organic fertilizers (castor bean cake and hoof and horn powder) x 3 application modes (100% before planting; 100% in top dressing; 50% before planting and 50% in top dressing) + 1 control (without these organic fertilizers). The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with five replications and plots of 1 m 2 . The relative index of chlorophyll ("Spad" index), height, number of leaves, fresh and dry weight of the plants were evaluated. All treatments of the factorial were better than the control, showing that these organic fertilizers improve production in chives. It is recommended to use the hoof and horn powder in installments (50% before planting and 50% in top dressing) or 100% in top dressing, the latter option being more interesting for reducing the need for labor, with just one application moment.
