Casting Manipulation—Midair Control of a Gripper by Impulsive Force

Abstract: We have developed a casting manipulator that includes a flexible light string in the link mechanism to enlarge the workspace of the manipulator. In the casting manipulation, an endeffector is launched to its target by releasing the string connected to it, and its trajectory is controlled by the tension of the string. In this paper, we present the midair control of the end-effector. As a simple way, we propose the braking technique to apply impulsive force to the end-effector by braking the movement of the stri… Show more

“…Arisumi et al developed the casting manipulator where an end-effector connected with a flexible string is cast by swinging a rigid arm like in fishing [1][2] [3]. However, swing motion yields a rotation of the end-effector.…”

“…After swinging the arm repeatedly to store the kinetic energy, the end-effecter is launched to the target by changing the length of the wire [1,2]. While the end-effecter flies, its trajectory is controlled by the tension of the wire [3]. The gripper then approaches the target with suitable state, and catches the target object [4].…”
