Casein Supplementation Does Not Affect the Estimates of True Total Tract Digestibility of Phosphorus in Soybean Meal for Growing Pigs Determined by the Regression Method

Abstract: Forty-eight barrows with an average initial body weight of 25.5±0.3 kg were assigned to 6 dietary treatments arranged in a 3×2 factorial of 3 graded levels of P at 1.42, 2.07, or 2.72 g/kg, and 2 levels of casein at 0 or 50 g/kg to compare the estimates of true total tract digestibility (TTTD) of P in soybean meal (SBM) for pigs fed diets with or without casein supplementation. The SBM is the only source of P in diets without casein, and in the diet with added casein, 1.0 to 2.4 g/kg of total dietary P was sup… Show more

“…Deficiency or imbalance of CP and AA in semi-purified diets has been concerned in previous studies. Liu and Adeola (2016), however, reported that the total tract digestibility of P in SBM determined by regression analysis was not affected by the addition of casein into semi-purified diets containing SBM as the sole source of P. Pedersen et al (2007) also reported that the DE and ME contents 1 Each least squares mean represents 10 observations except for the diet containing 100 g/kg casein (9 observations).…”

“…The assay feed ingredient was the sole source of dietary protein and P in traditional experimental diets when the regression method was applied to determine true P digestibility (Fan et al 2001;Shen et al 2002;Dilger and Adeola 2006). In contrast, highly digestible feedstuffs, such as casein and dried egg albumen, were included in test diets proposed by WPSA (2013), Liu et al (2014), Mutucumarana et al (2015) and Liu and Adeola (2016). The inclusion of casein or dried egg albumen in experimental diets was to improve the growth performance and utilisation of protein in broiler chickens, which was associated with precaecal digestion of P (Xue et al 2016).…”

“…They found SIPDC values of 0.623, 0.617, 0.615, and 0.444. Similarly, the digestibility of P from soybean meal was not influenced by the addition of casein in semipurified diets for broilers (Liu et al, 2014) and pigs (Liu and Adeola, 2016). In determining the ileal P digestibility of monocalcium phosphate in pigs, diets with low protein content impaired P digestibility, while P digestibility was higher in diets with higher protein levels (Xue et al, 2017).…”
