Case Study Research: The View From Complexity Science

Abstract: Many wonder why there has been so little change in care quality, despite substantial quality improvement efforts. Questioning why current approaches are not making true changes draws attention to the organization as a source of answers. We bring together the case study method and complexity science to suggest new ways to study health care organizations. The case study provides a method for studying systems. Complexity theory suggests that keys to understanding the system are contained in patterns of relationsh… Show more

“…Specifically, the case study methodology resulted in a relatively small population to draw on for this research. Despite interviewing a crosssection of shelter service providers and all women who were staying at the shelter, and one woman utilizing the shelter on an outpatient basis during the time of the study, the research methodology along with the sample size resulted in decreased generalizability of findings, a common criticism of case study methodology 51 . Future studies should attempt to verify the changing role and adaptation strategies of shelters with additional rural agencies and women.…”

“…While multicomponent development and implementation processes are always complex issues with many influential factors, the interaction between the elements and the actors of the process needs to be studied further [39]. A specific question for further study is the optimal role of internal and external experts in different phases of the processes.…”

“…The individual adaptations and their cumulative effects are the source of uncertainty and unpredictability in a complex system (Anderson, Crabtree, Steele, & McDaniel, 2005). The openness and ongoing interactions between the individual parts (or actors in a social system) means that the effect of each individual adaptation on the larger scale emerging patterns is unknown.…”

“…This may, for instance, have contributed to the latter succeeding in blocking a municipal plan of raising the local tourist tax. The success of individual adaptations can then be seen as dependent on certain coincidental circumstances, but relies also on the interactions between individual actors, which allows for a more effective response to a changing environment (Anderson et al, 2005).…”
