Case Study—Based Overview of Some Contemporary Challenges to Power Quality in Ship Systems

Abstract: The content of this paper consists of a presentation and discussion on a case study-based overview of some selected challenges dealing with a problem of power quality on ships. As a consequence, the theoretical considerations are aided by experimental results based mainly on the author's research team experience and achievements. Two basic aspects, assessment and improvement of power quality are taken into account. In the process of power quality assessment, the existing ambiguities are analyzed and discussed,… Show more

“…In an era of warfare, the US Department of Defense through its navy, trying to research in order to achieve cost effectiveness, but able to maintain the continuity of power. This is to realize productivity, resilience, and maximize survivability in war equipment during ship operations [7] [12]. With research by the US, it is expected that the size and weight of the system can be minimized so that the amount of ammunition and fuel that can be increased.…”

“…The harmonic mitigation strategies are proposed for both voltage and current harmonics in microgrids. The most commonly proposed methods are selective harmonic current injection for current harmonic mitigation [55,56,61], virtual grid impedance [31,32], resistive active power filter [59], repetitive control methods [60], and using additional devices such as D-STATCOM [35].…”

“…In order to gain the accurate assessment of the electrical waveform distortion, the distortion components have to be representative and integral to reality. The authors of numerous works [6], [8], [23], [24], [25], [26] indicate that restriction of the spectrum suggested in the norm [10] to 50 components may be the reason for the discrepancies. In work [23] presents the practical example of the supply voltage on a ship.…”

In work [23] presents the practical example of the supply voltage on a ship. In the voltage, apart from the fundamental component, there are dominating components with the frequency above 25,000 Hz.…”
