Case series of patients with chronic foot ulcers treated with autologous platelet‐rich plasma

Abstract: Treatment for patients with chronic wounds is entering a new era, and autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is among the most promising treatments. PRP contains a concentration of platelets obtained by centrifuging the patient's blood. Because it contains fibrin and high concentrations of growth factors, PRP is known to promote wound healing. In this study, we present five patients with chronic foot ulcers successfully treated with PRP in our institution. The patients had various underlying diseases: diabetes … Show more

“…57 PRP has shown to be effective at propagating new healthy tissue growth in a wide range of medical conditions, such as venous ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and tendinopathy. [58][59][60][61][62] Outside of one-patient case reports, there have been few studies investigating the use of PRP in patients with biopsy-proven LS. [63][64][65] A 2010 study examined injections of a combination of PRP and fat-derived mesenchymal cells in 15 women with vulvar LS.…”

“…77 Topical applications of autologous PRP have rendered unique advantages, especially for refractory wounds. 78 The advantages of PRP may originate mainly from the release of highly concentrated cytokines, growth factors, and antibacterial proteins. 79 Cytokines and growth factors are helpful for cellular proliferation, migration, and the differentiation of fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and keratinocytes.…”

“…For several decades, PRP has provided a promising alternative to traditional methods by promoting safe and natural healing [12]. The combination of autologous PRP, subcutaneously and topically, and the optimized diet opens a new therapeutic window for treatment of the chronic wounds.…”
