Case report of a symptomatic giant renal oncocytoma

Abstract: Renal oncocytomas are benign tumours, often asymptomatic, and picked incidentally on radiological imaging. We present a case report of a symptomatic giant renal oncocytoma in a 61-year old man having lower back/right flank pain. A large right renal mass was identified on abdominal CT scan. Radiological features were not sufficient to differentiate this lesion from renal cancer. Right radical nephrectomy was performed. Typical features of oncocytoma, without evidence of malignancy, were seen on histological exa… Show more

“…7 Clinically, oncocytomas are found incidentally, but hematuria is the most common complaint in symptomatic patients. 8 The diagnosis of these benign lesions is generally achieved by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. 7 Unfortunately, most renal oncocytomas cannot be differentiated from malignant RCC by clinical or radiographic criteria.…”

“…Oncocytoma usually occurs during the seventh decade of life, varying from 20 to 86 years of age with a predominance in males [ 7 ]. Most oncocytomas are single and unilateral, although, occasionally, they can be bilateral and multifocal [ 8 ]. The size of these tumors typically varies from 0.6 to 14 cm [ 9 ].…”

“…RCC coexist with renal oncocytoma in 10% to 32% of the cases. [3,5] Macroscopically, these tumors are tan in color or light brown (mahogany brown), localized to the cortex, well circumscribed with a commonly seen central scar. Renal oncocytomas consist of pure oncocytes, which are polygonal cells with abundant mitochondria-rich eosinophilic cytoplasm arising from intercalated cells in the kidney.…”
