Cascading effects of climate change on recreational marine flats fishes and fisheries

Abstract: Tropical and subtropical coastal flats are shallow regions of the marine environment at the intersection of land and sea. These regions provide myriad ecological goods and services, including recreational fisheries focused on flats-inhabiting fishes such as bonefish, tarpon, and permit. The cascading effects of climate change have the potential to negatively impact coastal flats around the globe and to reduce their ecological and economic value. In this paper, we consider how the combined effects of climate ch… Show more

“…Among them, coastal development, expanding aquaculture and agriculture, and the acquisition of timber for domestic use are severe threats [210]. Climate change, eutrophication, and hydrological alteration are considered moderate threats [211], and diseases, tourism, and pollution (noise/thermal/chemical/oil) come under low-level threats to mangrove ecosystems [212]. The overall threats to mangroves have been categorised into three groups based on D. Alongi s classification of threats [209] (Figure 5).…”

“…A limited proportion of the earth's freshwater resources is accessible to humans, primarily due to unplanned urbanization, chemicals, and rapid industrialization. These factors contribute to significant pollution levels in aquatic organisms and the degradation of water quality, particularly affecting aquatic fauna, such as fish (Danylchuk et al, 2023). Water quality and availability directly impact the overall quality of life for any given population (Shah et al, 2019).…”

“…Climatic changes as a global concern influenced marine ecosystems [ 7 ], where these changes interact with anthropogenic effects like water management practices (e.g., drainage and pollution runoff) [ 8 ]. Higher temperature and salinity and lower pH and dissolved oxygen as climatic-driven change cascades would undoubtedly affect fish health [ 9 ], indeed infectious diseases, which respond acutely to climate changes [ 10 , 11 ].…”
