Cascade Synthesis of Five‐Membered Lactones using Biomass‐Derived Sugars as Carbon Nucleophiles

Abstract: We report the cascade synthesis of five-membered lactones from a biomass-derived triose sugar, 1,3-dihydroxyacetone, and various aldehydes. This achievement provides a new synthetic strategy to generate a wide range of valuable compounds from a single biomass-derived sugar. Among several examined Lewis acid catalysts, homogeneous tin chloride catalysts exhibited the best performance to form carbon-carbon bonds. The scope and limitations of the synthesis of five-membered lactones using aldehyde compounds are in… Show more

“…However, this result is inconsistent with the conversion of 3- or 6-carbon sugars into 2 . SnCl 4 has the best performance among tin halides (SnCl 4 , SnBr 4 , and SnI 4 ) for the production of 2 from 3- or 6-carbon sugars 2427 . As chloride has the largest electronegativity among halogen atoms, the strong Lewis acidity of Sn in SnCl 4 seems to accelerate the retro aldol reaction, dehydration, and 1,2-hydride shift.…”

“…The use of aldehydes instead of formaldehyde can yield a wide range of products in the multistep HBL preparation process. Indeed, our group reported the cascade synthesis of 5-membered lactones using a combination of DHA and various aldehydes [68] (Scheme 15). Such a synthetic route is particularly advantageous, as 5-membered lactones can be utilized not only as fine chemicals but also as raw materials.…”

“…In addition to the after‐mentioned advantages, there are some drawbacks of using biomass alone as a feedstock. The major issues related to biomass include the presence of an excessive amount of water, oxygen and ash that contribute to decreasing the heating values, hence the efficiency of the process [4,5] …”
