Abstract:Este artigo busca analisar e explicar as modificações por que passa um mesmo tropo literário – o do escravo doméstico como portador de uma carta amorosa – em três produções ficcionais brasileiras do século XIX, a saber: Rosa (1849), de Joaquim Manuel de Macedo; O demônio familiar (1857), de José de Alencar; e, por fim, Iaiá Garcia (1878), de Machado de Assis.
