Carotid Intima and Media Thickness Correlation with Central Blood Pressure Measurements by Tonometric and Oscillometric Methods: A Proof of Concept

Abstract: Background:The early detection of vascular damage in subclinical stages of hypertensive disease may be the key point in the prevention of cardiovascular outcomes. Objectives: to correlate parameters of structural vascular damage (measurement of the carotid intima-media thickness) with parameters of functional vascular damage (central hemodynamic measurements) in pre-hypertensive and hypertensive patients taking up to two classes of anti-hypertensive drugs. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study co… Show more

“…In the present study, the estimation of PWV was based on the Dyna Mapa AOP® oscillometric device based on its advantages and accessibility in our community ( 12 , 14 , 15 ). Besides it, there is a series of longitudinal studies showing a good correlation with target organ lesions and cardiovascular events with oscillometric devices ( 20 22 ), when compared to the gold standard noninvasive method of carotid-femoral tonometry ( 15 ). The differences observed between our data and the study by Oliveira et al ( 12 ) could be related, at least partially, by regional and ethnical variations in the Brazilian population ( 23 , 24 ).…”

“…The carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) does not measure AS itself, but is strongly correlated with changes in PWV [36]. PWV and cIMT are both parameters of functional vascular damage [37].…”

“…The assessment of arterial stiffness obtained through pulse wave velocity (PWV) and CA-IMT are considered, by the main guidelines of arterial hypertension, important markers of cardiovascular risk, especially in the early stages of hypertension and in groups of low and intermediate risk. 11…”
