Carotenemia and hepatomegaly in an atopic child on an exclusion diet for a food allergy

Abstract: Eczema is a frequent childhood manifestation and a few atopic children are allergic to certain foods or aeroallergens. Anxious parents of atopic children often have a fear of topical steroid-related side-effects, and some may try a range of elimination diets to avoid allergies. Elimination diets increase the risk of anaphylaxis on re-exposure to previously tolerated foods from the loss of oral tolerance. Unbalanced diets together with an inadvertent excessive consumption of fruits and vegetables may lead to ca… Show more

“…An example published in 2002, where at least 63 people consumed herbal tea inadvertently mixed with neurotoxic Japanese star anise ( Illicium anisatum ) ( Vermaak, Viljoen & Lindstron, 2013 ). Likewise, conditions as Hypercarotenemia (OMIM # 115300), an autosomal dominant disease, in which the main treatment consists of restrictive diet ( Gangakhedkar, Somerville & Jelleyman, 2015 ) can cause several health damage to the individual who inadvertently consumes dyes used in feed farmed fish.…”

“…The excessive intake of carotenoids causes carotenemia in humans, which is benign. Moreover, unusual diets and the consumption of preformed vitamin A present in the food supplements may lead to vitamin A toxicity [ 155 , 156 ]. In summary, a significant number of previous studies support the use of food supplements, nutraceuticals and carotenoid-rich foods; however, in all cases, the consumption of these supplements must be accompanied by professional/medical supervision.…”
