Carnivore mammals in a fragmented landscape in northeast of São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: São Paulo is the most developed state in Brazil and little of its native vegetation remains. In Luiz Antonio and Santa Rita do Passa Quatro municipalities, only small fragments of cerrado (Brazilian savanna) physiognomies (cerradão, cerrado sensu stricto) and of semideciduous forest have been left, surrounded by eucalyptus silviculture and sugar-cane agriculture. However, that vegetation mosaic still shelters large mammals, including several carnivore species. To detect the carnivores present in such a mosaic … Show more

“…The association of the species to the fragment proximity clarified by the biplot graph and the model suggested the importance of this landscape component to the species occurrence, possibly also serving for shelter during the day. Cerdocyon thous has also been recorded in eucalyptus plantations by Lyra-Jorge et al (2008) and Dotta and Verdade (2007). Silviculture, as indicated by Rocha et al (2008), should be used by C. thous for foraging.…”

“…Dietz (1984) reported that although MW were highly sensitive to the physical presence of people, they were tolerant of agriculture and persisted where ranchers and farmers had earned a livelihood for generations. vynne (2010) has found MW in soya fields, Lyra-Jorge et al (2008) documented their presence in eucalyptus plantations, and Santos et al (2003) showed them to thrive on dairy farms cut from Atlantic forest. If sufficient resources are available, MW do not need intensive management.…”

“…Several studies suggest cautious optimism for maned wolf survival in farmland (Courtenay, 1994;Dietz, 1984;Lyra-Jorge et al, 2008;Santos et al, 2003;vynne, 2010). Outside Emas NP, Brazil, vynne (2010) found that MW can even survive in mechanized cropland where there is adequate land management, including at least 20% set aside on each farm as a wildlife refuge, and low-growing crops (soya) with sufficient rodent prey.…”

“…A failure in the detection of the two feline species mentioned above could be due to two non-excludent reasons, (1) their naturally low population densities (Lyra- Jorge et al 2008, Almeida et al 2013, and (2) the high frequency of Puma concolor and Leopardus pardalis in several trails, whose presence has been negatively related to the occurrence of these species , Oliveira 2011, Oliveira-Santos et al 2012. In addition, for L. wiedii, trail characteristics -which were more open, wide and managed than the preferred by the species --could have contributed to this result (Goulart et al 2009).…”
