CARMiCLOC: Context Awareness Middleware in Cloud Computing

Abstract: Technological advances such as miniaturization of sensors, mobile devices and increased computational capabilities have given way to Context Aware Applications (ACC), which constantly monitor and change depending on the context. These applications require a variety of features and services, particularly on the management of context. When applications/services lack part or some of these services, they must be consumed from other suppliers who can provide them via a middleware. In addition, due to the changes un… Show more

“…CARMiCLOC is a reflective Middleware [1], which incorporates the autonomic computing for the self-adaptation, and the cloud computing paradigm for a SaaS (Software as a service) behavior, to provide services and functionalities that allow managing the context for CAA. This middleware is divided into two levels: the base level corresponds to the users and applications that are in the shared context.…”

“…Nowadays, technological advances in computing capacities, and especially in sensors and mobile devices, have allowed the development of applications with behaviors that depend on the context. These Context-Aware Applications (CAAs) constantly monitor and react in different ways, to adapt to the situation in which they are [1,2]. Particularly, micro-localization applications have appeared as a type of CAA for mobile devices [2,4].…”

“…This information is managed in a cycle that is composed by the discovering and modeling of the context, the reasoning based on the context, and the distribution of the context. For this layer, we take as reference the services defined in [36], where is proposed a Context-Aware Reflective Middleware based on the Cloud Computing, with a range of services to manage the context information (see [4] for details about this layer).…”

“…It was during that time that middleware for distributed systems was definitely established as the software entity capable of abstracting heterogeneity from an underlying collection of hardware devices in order to offer a set of homogenous, centralized-looking facilities (typically, an Application Programming Interface or API) to the application layer [16] [17]. Further developments, such as Cloud Computing, have made middleware a software entity of critical importance in the development of distributed systems [18] [19]. Figure 2 illustrates the typical location of middleware in the latter; due to this and how it is accessed by the application layer it effectively withholds the different (and quite often, opposite) hardware components present in a deployment, as well as their local firmware and operating systems.…”
