Cariostatic Effect of Daily Use of a Fluoride-Containing Lozenge Compared to Fortnightly Rinses with 0.2% Sodium Fluoride

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to compare the caries-preventive effect of a daily fluoride-containing lozenge and fortnightly rinses with a fluoride solution. A total of 670 children in first grade (7 years) and fourth grade (11 years) attending schools where the fluoride content of the drinking water was less than 0.25 ppm, were examined for dental caries. The subjects were stratified according to initial DMFS and randomly assigned to two groups. One group performed fortnightly rinses with 0.2% neutral … Show more

“…The drop-out rate during the trial was a little lower than the 25-26% in some of our previous trials [Poulsen et al, 1981;Kirkegaard et al, 1986] and slightly higher for the 1989-92 cohort (23%) than for the 1990-93 cohort (17%). This difference may have been generated by the negative effect of the media's comments on the trial.…”

“…The results of the Driscoll et al study contrast with those of the study of Poulsen et al (90), which was very similar in design, but used supplements with less fluoride, had a shorter duration, and studied older children.…”

“…Poulsen et al (90) compared the effects of daily (school days only) 0.5 mg fluoride lozenges and biweekly 0.2 percent NaF mouthrinses administered at school. The study was well conducted: the participants were initially seven-and 11-year-olds; 499 were still available after three years.…”

“…The findings of the other study, conducted by Poulsen et al, also are in disagreement with those of the Springfield study (15). In that study, the caries-preventive effects of chewing and swallowing a lozenge containing0.5 mg F each day in school were compared with those of fortnightly use in school of a mouthrinse containing 0.2 percent NaF.…”
