Caries Prevalence Measured with QLF after Treatment with Fixed Orthodontic Appliances: Influencing Factors

Abstract: Caries prevalence on the buccal surfaces of teeth in orthodontic patients was determined with QLF and visual examination immediately after removal of fixed appliances. The number of lesions found by QLF far outnumbered that found by visual examination, but the distribution pattern was similar. 97% of all subjects and on average 30% of the buccal surfaces in a person were affected. On average, in males 40% of surfaces and in females 22% showed white spots (p < 0.01). Caries prevalence was lower (p < 0.01) in in… Show more

“…[1][2][3][4][5] When checking the MS and LB scores, both appear to have a strong effect on DFS and the caries risk. We therefore believe that a chairside saliva test is very worthwhile in order to reduce a patient's caries risk.…”

“…4 The use of conventional oral hygiene procedures in orthodontic patients for plaque removal is more difficult, and, adjacent to the brackets, the clearance of plaque and carbohydrates by saliva is also reduced. 5 This may lead to caries lesions in the enamel that can occur within a month, irrespective of mechanical plaque control and the use of fluoridated dentifrice. [6][7][8] The caries prevalence in teenagers and adolescents in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is high.…”

“…3,4 La literatura ha demostrado que los tratamientos de ortodoncia incrementan la acumulación de placa y la colonización bacteriana por lo que resultan afectados los tejidos periodontales y dentarios. [21][22][23][24][25] Si se permite el crecimiento de esta placa aparecerán algunos cambios cuyos resultados dan lugar al establecimiento de la gingivitis tras dos a tres semanas.…”

“…While the technique was validated both quantitatively by comparison with mineral loss and lesion depth from transverse or longitudinal microradiography [22][23][24][25][26][27][28] and qualitatively by comparison with visual detection and histology [29][30][31][32][33][34] the true strength of the technique is not its capability to detect lesions but to follow the oral health over time. The images or series of longitudinal images of a tooth over an extended period in time, can be analyzed for GF loss and presence of RF.…”
