The article reviews the practice and research literature in career counseling and development in 1998. The literature is presented and discussed under the following topical headings: contexts and populations, career processes, transitions, career assessment, and career counseling, services and programs.The career counseling and development literature published in 1998 was diverse and extensive. To reflect this diversity, we have selected pertinent articles from the leading journals in the field of career counseling and development as well as from journals peripheral to the field. We broadly scanned English language books and journals published in North America and other regions of the world. This review embodies conceptual and research articles, articles that speak directly to career counseling and other interventions, and those that have implications for interventions. Among the research articles, we have included studies that used both qualitative and quantitative data as well as case studies. The result is a review of 21 books and 259 articles from 24 career development and counseling journals and 34 psychology and social and behavioral sciences journals.Such a diverse range and number of items challenged us to construct a suitable way to classify them. Racial and disability identities are separate issues, yet they both contribute to the multiple social identities that influence career counseling outcomes for persons of color with disabilities. Few studies have examined the effects of racial and disability identity on the career outcomes of members of this group. This article discusses racial and disability identity as assets for career counseling of people of color with disabilities, whose career counseling outcomes are also mediated by the prevailing racial and disabilities disparities in career participation. Possibilities for further research on identities as resources for career counseling are also discussed.

Consistent with the career development issues that black* people encounter, it is likely that black human resource developers face unique career development issues versus human resource developers in general. However, an exhaustive search did not find research that has focused specifically on the career development process of black human resource development professionals. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe the career experiences of black human resource developers. A qualitative study was conducted of 10 black human resource developers. Interviewing was the primary data collection method and the data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The results of this study indicate that the respondents experienced similar career challenges to other black workers. Based on the results, we posit that because of racial prejudice and discrimination, black human resource developers serve as outsiders within traditional work organizations and become skilled at using bicultural strategies for managing various aspects of their lives.
