While ‘later life sees care emerge in ways that are new’ (Dawson and Goodwin‐Hawkins), this article argues that there is a general form to ethical care that pertains to all individual citizens in a liberal or democratic society. The form is one of balance: between engagement and inclusion on the one hand, and a preservation of autonomy and personal sovereignty on the other; between action and inaction. ‘Cosmopolitan politesse’ is introduced as a term to describe a social ethics whereby Anyone is given the recognition—the right and the space—to fulfil an innate capacity for creating their own world‐views and pursuing their own life‐projects. Under this rubric ‘care’ is imagined as a particular kind of social framework or environment that endeavours to give an appropriate proportionality to autonomy and inclusion. A ‘caring sociality’ includes ensuring individual members of a ‘personal preserve’ of embodied consciousness over which each has sovereignty. The article considers the elements ‘inclusion’ and ‘autonomy’ in turn, and then the nature of their ethical balance such that Anyone may remain ‘at home’ in the world.

<p>El presente artículo pretende realizar un acercamiento a los estudios sobre el razonamiento moral humano desarrollados por Lawrence Kohlberg<a href="file:///C:/Users/windows/Dropbox/Doctorat/Articles%20en%20revistes/Daimon%20n%C2%BA63/La%20%C3%A9tica%20del%20cuidado%20y%20Carol%20Gilligan%20-%20Daimon%2063.doc#_ftn1">[1]</a> así como a la crítica realizada por parte de Carol Gilligan a dicho trabajo. Abordaremos pues, la teoría del desarrollo moral de Kohlberg, adentrándonos en los niveles morales preconvencional, convencional y postconvencional, con el objetivo de discernir si esta explicación evolutiva de la moralidad humana adquiere un carácter universal, o si por el contrario, se refiere a las estructuras morales de un grupo humano concreto.
