Cardiovascular Responses Induced By Dental Treatment

Abstract: Brand HS, Abraham-lnpijn L: Cardiovascular responses induced by dental treatment.Changes in mean heart rate and mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure are induced by both the patient's anticipation of scheduled treatment and the actual dental treatment itself. Significant changes have been observed before application of a local anesthetic, during restorative treatment, during extractions, and when epinephrine-impregnated retraction cords were used. These cardiovascular responses may vary according to the l… Show more

“…This is partially due to the endogenous epinephrine release owing to emotional stress. 28 The increase in the pulse rate in the intervention group could be due to the increase in the respiratory activity during the relaxation exercise. The children belonging to the intervention group were breathing out more forcefully during the administration of anaesthetic.…”

“…Some studies reported an increased heart rate before, 13,22 during, 23 or after local anesthesia. 14,16 According to Brand and Abraham-Inpijn, 24 the heart rate increases found during an injection of local anesthesia may be related to the use of vasoconstrictors and, in some cases, heart rate may decrease when local anesthesia is not used.…”
