Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Heart Failure

Abstract: Purpose of Review The purpose of this review is to summarize the application of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in the diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of patients with heart failure (HF). Recent Findings CMR is an important non-invasive imaging modality in the assessment of ventricular volumes and function and in the analysis of myocardial tissue characteristics. The information derived from CMR provides a comprehensive evaluation of HF. Its unique ability of tiss… Show more

“…New MRI T 1 mapping sequences, based on Look and Locker schemes of saving time in NMR relaxation measurements, are now available on clinical MRI scanners and used for mapping of native T 1 in myocardium 59 . Sequences such as modified Look–Locker imaging (MOLLI) 60 and saturation‐recovery single‐shot acquisition (SASHA) 61 offer a drastic reduction in T 1 mapping with a slight decrease in accuracy 62,63 . The use of newly developed variants of fast imaging sequences with variable flip angle and variable TR deliver other options for the rapid and more accurate T 1 mapping 64–67 .…”

“…CMR has an important role in patients presenting with unexplained HF and those with an infarct-like presentation with non-obstructive CAD. Its ability of tissue characterization can help in revealing the underlying etiology and sometimes offer some prognostic information [ 24 , 25 ].…”

“…Finally, new advances in edema weighted imaging, T1 and T2 mapping, fingerprinting and three-dimensional imaging all add to the diagnostic and prognostic utility of CMR in heart failure evaluation [51]. The utility of CMR is likely to further grow over time as these advances are incorporated into more routine clinical practice, and the ability of CMR to simultaneously answer multiple different clinical questions for heart failure patients will further speed its growth.…”
