Cardiovascular disease in diabetes type 2: current concepts

Abstract: Type 2 diabetes is a major and accelerating public health challenge. Between 1980 and 2014, a period of just 35 years, the number of adults with diabetes globally is estimated to have increased from 108 to 422 million, due not only to sharply rising obesity rates, but also to increasing population size, longer life expectancy, and rising prevalence of diabetes worldwide. Overall, worldwide age-standardized adult diabetes prevalence doubled from 4.3% to 9.0% in men and from 5.0% to 7.9% in women. The largest in… Show more

“…In all six cohorts, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus was low, reflecting the general, comparatively low prevalence in the Swedish population [22]. The lack of an increase in diabetes, in spite of increasing obesity, has also been documented in some other European countries; the reason for this is not clear [23].…”

“…Coronary heart disease, peripheral artery disease, and cerebrovascular conditions are all common among people with DM, and their prevalence increases with worsening glucose status because of the combined effect of a higher risk of accelerated atherosclerosis and other, more direct lipotoxic and gluco-toxic effects. Concomitant risk factors such as smoking, arterial hypertension, obesity, and dyslipidemia further increase the likelihood of these complications [ 21 ]. Any strategy aimed to improve DM care has to take into consideration the diverse comorbidities and complications associated with the incidence and progression of DM, both in terms of the type of interventions as well as in the outcomes proposed to determine its impact.…”
