Cardiovascular disease burden from ambient air pollution in Europe reassessed using novel hazard ratio functions

Abstract: Aims Ambient air pollution is a major health risk, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular mortality. A recent Global Exposure Mortality Model, based on an unmatched number of cohort studies in many countries, provides new hazard ratio functions, calling for re-evaluation of the disease burden. Accordingly, we estimated excess cardiovascular mortality attributed to air pollution in Europe. Methods and results The new hazard ratio functions have been combined with ambi… Show more

“…The disease burden from ambient air pollution is becoming increasingly apparent, with a host of recent studies drawing close association between pollution levels and reduced life expectancy (Hoek et al 2013;Lelieveld et al 2019). An estimated 4.2 million premature human deaths worldwide are attributed to ambient air pollution (World Health Organization (WHO), 2018).…”

“…The World Health Organization has defined coronary heart disease (CHD) as the world's leading cause of death and disability between 2000(World Health Organization, 2018. In Europe, CHD continues to contribute significantly to mortality (Lelieveld et al, 2019).…”

“…Extensive research has been conducted in recent years on the adverse health effects of particulate matter (PM) on the human cardiovascular system and the lungs. Cohort studies show that negative effects include emphysema, lung cancer, diabetes, and hypertension (Lelieveld et al, 2019;Lim et al, 2012;Pope et al, 2002;Wichmann et al, 2000), which cause a large number of premature deaths (Lelieveld et al, 2019(Lelieveld et al, , 2015. Although these risks are largely known and confirmed, discussions on effective measures to reduce exposure to air pollution are ongoing.…”
