“…Patients who receive the above interventions are more likely to have had an unwitnessed or prolonged submersion injury and hence more likely to have a fatal outcome. In a study done on 29 adults, Omar et al 26 found that both tracheal intubation and CPR were more common in nonsurvivors versus survivors of drowning. Although ECMO is usually associated with increased severity of the underlying condition and was more commonly used in the fatal drowning group, we found that it was not associated with mortality in our study.…”
