Cardioprotective Effects of Fullerenol C60(Oh)24 on a Single Dose Doxorubicin-induced Cardiotoxicity in Rats with Malignant Neoplasm

Abstract: The therapeutic utility of the anthracycline antibiotic doxorubicin is limited due to its cardiotoxicity. Our aim was to investigate the efficacy of fullerenol C 60 (OH) 24 in preventing single, high-dose doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats with malignant neoplasm. Experiment was performed on adult female Sprague Dawley rats with chemically induced mammary carcinomas. The animals were sacrificed two days after the application of doxorubicin and/or fullerenol, and the serum activities of CK, LDH and α-HB… Show more

“…Among numerous reported fullerene derivatives, nanofullerol is the most extensively studied, and has been implicated as a powerful antioxidant in the biomedical field. [48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56] Therefore, fullerol was selected in our present study.…”

“…Increased significant levels of SGOT without increased of SGPT levels are common in cardiac injury. [14] Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a metabolite of lipid peroxidation by free radicals. Malondialdehyde (MDA) formed when the free radical hydroxyl such as ROS reacts with fatty acid component of cell membrane.…”

“…8.). Again, it was confirmed oxidative nature of cardiac injury caused by anthracycline application (elevated parameters of oxidative stress -SOD, MDA, GST, GSH, GR and TAS) and antioxidative capability of fullerenol, which maintain all examinated parameters at the basal level, when is applied as pretreatment to doxorubicin (Injac, R. et al, 2008a) Protective effects of fullerenol C 60 (OH) 24 on Wistar rats with colorectal carcinoma (chronic regimen of DOX administration -1.5mg/kg/week, for 3 weeks)) was assessed by the same research group. They findings confirmed cardioprotective role of fullerenol, without modulation of antitumor activity of the drug.…”
