Cardioprotective effect of grape polyphenol extract against doxorubicin induced cardiotoxicity

Abstract: Doxorubicin is a chemotherapeutic agent known to cause cardiotoxicity that is thought to be associated with oxidative stress. The aim of the current study is to investigate the role of grape polyphenols’ antioxidant property as cardioprotective against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. Adult Wistar rats weighing 200 ± 20 g were divided into 3 different groups: a doxorubicin group that received a single intraperitoneal administration of doxorubicin (8.0 mg/kg body weight), an experimental group that received … Show more

“…According to the results obtained for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of antioxidants in the present study, important phytochemicals such as polyphenols, alkaloids and tannins were present in ABEC in significant quantities while toxic phytochemicals such as cyanogenic glycosides and cardenoloid glycosides were absent. These results corroborated with many previous findings where the presence of antioxidants such as polyphenols contributed significantly to the protective effect against doxorubicin induced cardiotoxicity ( Kaiserová et al, 2007 , Hamza et al, 2016 , Ojha et al, 2016 , Afsar et al, 2017 , Ibrahim et al, 2017 , Sergazy et al, 2020 ).…”

“… 2013 , 2017 ; Sergazy et al. 2020 ), we tried to evaluate the effect of PFPE, which consisted of a variety of antioxidants and lowered the toxicity of piperine, in Dox-induced adverse events. This included the haematological and immunological parameters, the specific immune cells associated with antitumor immunity, including Th1, Th2 and Treg cells, and cytokine array analysis.…”

“…Several studies suggest that the administration of bioactive molecules together with anti-cancer drugs may play a beneficial role in cardiovascular protection due to their pleiotropic antioxidant effect [11,[28][29][30]]. Flavonoids, for example, thanks to their radicalscavenging activity, can be considered highly protective molecules against chronic toxicity caused by Doxo [31][32][33][34].…”
