“…Box 1 highlights the feeling of Australian health professionals about the emergence of cardiac rehabilitation in the 1970s ( 26 ). At the same time a survey in Britain indicated that there were no specific cardiac rehabilitation facilities although 8% (nine hospitals) of respondents reported there was some form of exercise program but on further investigation this seemed focused on early mobilization and/or physiotherapy and exercise regimens during hospital stay ( 27 ). Overall, although 74% of respondent cardiologists were in favor of a service there was a strong focus on the need for “ individual instruction by the physician ” and the focus was on exercise although several noted the importance of “ psychotherapy ” and “ individual advice ” although funding was identified as a barrier ( 27 ).…”

“…Cardiac rehabilitation was not initiated by nurses in the UK. The earliest survey of cardiac rehabilitation in the UK shows that a very small number of physiotherapists were involved in early mobilization and a graduated increase in physical activity (Groden et al ., 1971). The nursing role did not develop until later; it increased significantly during and since the late 1980s due to the funding initiative by the British Heart Foundation (BHF).…”

“…The regimens used and results obtained have been reviewed by Kellerman (10), Raab (11) and Sanne (12). Except for the work of Groden (13) and Carson (14), there has been a remarkable absence of practical work in cardiac rehabilitation in Britain, although the joint working party on this subject set up by the Royal College of Physicians and British Cardiac Society may help to establish the recommendations of the World Health Organization (15).…”
