“…Although the properties of Al4O4C have been well established, we can recognize that there appears some uncertainty and ambiguity about the understanding of the occurrence of Al2OC. Kikuchi et al (9) reported no formation of Al2OC in the reduction of alumina with carbon up to 2270 K, while Foster et al (7) and Ginsberg and Sparwald(12) reported its formation (above about 2200 K) in the reaction of alumina with carbon or with aluminum carbide. In the measurements of the equilibrium pressure of carbon monoxide in the Al-O-C system, Motzfeldt and Sanberg(8) detected no Al2OC phase, and suggested that Al2OC may be chemical-thermodynamically unstable at high temperatures.…”
