Abstract. Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) in agricultural soils can mitigate atmospheric CO 2 concentration and also contribute to increased soil fertility and ecosystem resilience. The role of major nutrients in SOC dynamics is complex, due to simultaneous effects on net primary productivity (NPP) that influence crop residue carbon inputs and in the rate of heterotrophic respiration (carbon outputs). This study investigated the effect on SOC stocks of three different levels of phosphorus and potassium (PK) fertilisation rates in the absence of nitrogen fertilisation and of three different levels of nitrogen fertiliser in the absence of PK fertiliser. This was done by analysing data from 10 metareplicated Swedish long-term field experiments (> 45 years). With N fertilisation, SOC stocks followed yield increases. However, for all PK levels, we found average SOC losses ranging from −0.04 ± 0.09 Mg ha −1 yr −1 (ns) for the lowest to −0.09 ± 0.07 Mg ha −1 yr −1 (p = 0.008) for the highest application rate, while crop yields as a proxy for carbon input increased significantly with PK fertilisation by 1, 10 and 15 %. We conclude that SOC dynamics are mainly outputdriven in the PK-fertilised regime but mostly input-driven in the N-fertilised regime, due to the much more pronounced response of NPP to N than to PK fertilisation. It has been established that P rather than K is the element affecting ecosystem carbon fluxes, where P fertilisation has been shown to (i) stimulate heterotrophic respiration, (ii) reduce the abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and (iii) decrease the crop root : shoot ratio, leading to higher root-derived carbon input.The higher export of N in the PK-fertilised plots in this study could (iv) have led to increased N mining and thus mineralisation of organic matter. More integrated experiments are needed to gain a better understanding of the relative importance of each of the above-mentioned mechanisms leading to SOC losses after P addition.

Abstract 26The soil structure of paddy soil is very dynamic from the aggregate to the pedon scale 27 because of intensive anthropogenic management strategies. In this study, we tested the 28 hypothesis that long-term inorganic and organic fertilization can affect soil structure at 29 different scales. Microstructure assessed by soil aggregates (3 -5 mm in diameter) and 30 macrostructure assessed by small soil cores (CoreS) (5 cm in diameter, 5 cm in height) and 31 large soil cores (CoreL) (10 cm in diameter, 10 cm in height) were sampled from three 32 long-term fertilization treatments, including no fertilizer (CK), application of inorganic 33 fertilizer (NPK), and a combination of inorganic fertilizer and organic manure (NPKOM), 34 established in 1982. They were scanned at two scales with two types of micro-Computed 35 Tomography (micro-CT) and quantified using image analysis. Results showed that relative to 36 CK treatment, long-term NPKOM fertilization increased soil organic C (SOC) by 28% and 37 available water content (AWC) by 20%, but decreased soil bulk density by 0.2 g cm -338 whereas NPK showed no difference. Soils under CK and NPK treatments exhibited an 39 identical dense structure at both aggregate and core scales in which pores were mainly 40 cracks resulting from shrink/swell processes, and showed no significant difference in porosity 41 and size distribution of the CT-identified pores (> 3.7 µm). As compared with the CK 42 treatment, the soil in the NPKOM treatment had greater intra-and inter-aggregate pores, 43 and increased porosity by 58.3%, 144.9%, and 65.9% at aggregate, CoreS, and CoreL 44 scales, respectively. These were attributed to the biopores formed from decayed roots, 45 stubble, and organic manures as a result of increased yields and direct amendment of 46 organic manure. Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar atributos do solo em resposta à diferentes usos da terra no Sul de Minas Gerais. Foram amostrados Gleissolos sob floresta nativa e cultivos de arroz (Oryza sativa) irrigado por inundação e de feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris), bem como um Argissolo não inundável sob floresta nativa. O cultivo promoveu o aumento da densidade nos Gleissolos, até a profundidade de 0,4 m, o que resultou em menores diâmetros médios geométrico e ponderado de agregados, especialmente para o arrozal sob inundação, cultivado anualmente com enxada rotativa. A análise micromorfológica do solo evidenciou que a compactação ocorreu em razão do menor espaço macroporoso entre agregados, bem como da menor porosidade derivada da atividade biológica. Os teores de C orgânico do solo (COS) e N total (N) nos Gleissolos cultivados foram cerca de 55 e 40% menores do que no Gleissolo sob mata, em consequência da decomposição orgânica acelerada pelo cultivo. Contudo, o Gleissolo sob mata nativa apresentou teores e estoques de COS e N similares aos de um Argissolo sob mata, o que indica que o efeito da anaerobiose sobre a matéria orgânica do solo foi menor do que o esperado.Termos para indexação: horizonte glei, matéria orgânica do solo, micromorfologia do solo, solos hidromórficos. Impacts of long-term cultivation of flooded rice in gley soilsAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate soil attributes in response to different land use systems in the south of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The soils sampled were gley soils under native forest, flooded rice (Oryza sativa) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) croplands, as well as a dryland Ultisol under native forest. Cultivation increased bulk density in the gley soils, up to 0.4-m soil depth, which resulted in lower weighted mean diameter and lower geometric mean diameter of aggregates, especially for rice crops under flooding, annually tilled with rotary hoe. Micromorphological analyses of soil showed that soil compaction occurred due to the lower macroporosity among aggregates, as well as to the lower porosity derived from biological activity. Soil organic C (SOC) and total nitrogen (N) in the cultivated gley soils were approximately 55 and 40% lower than in gley soil under native forest, as a consequence of accelerated organic decomposition caused by tillage. However, the gley soil under native forest showed contents and stocks of SOC and N similar to those of the Ultisol under forest, which suggests that the effect of anaerobiosis on soil organic matter was weaker than expected.
