Carbon Nanotubes Conjugated to Tumor Lysate Protein Enhance the Efficacy of an Antitumor Immunotherapy

Abstract: The biomedical applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted deep interest in recent years. Antitumor immunotherapy has the potential to improve the prognosis of cancer treatment but the efficacy of current immunotherapy generally needs further improvement. Multi-walled CNTs conjugated to tumor lysate protein are investigated as to whether they would enhance the efficacy of an immunotherapy employing a tumor-cell vaccine in a mouse model bearing the H22 liver cancer. The tumor cure rate is found to be… Show more

“…MWNTs have been conjugated to tumour lysate protein as an antigen. This specifically increased the antitumor immune response [48]. Glioma is a brain tumor that is able to evade the host immune system, resulting in lack of benefit from conventional chemotherapy.…”

“…Meng et al 118 conjugated MWCNTs to tumor lysate protein to enhance the efficacy of immunotherapy employing a tumor cell vaccine. In an H22 liver cancer-bearing mouse model, the efficacy of tumor curing and the cellular antitumor immune reaction in the tumor lysate protein-conjugated CNTs were markedly improved.…”

“…Their results showed that this derivative, together with ovalbumin and an adjuvant, elicited high virus-neutralizing antibody responses in comparison with the non-conjugated peptide. Since this work, the advantages of immunization with proteins and 95 peptides using CNTs have occasionally been confirmed, [55][56][57][58] but, to the best of our knowledge, no evidence of an enhancement in the immune response and antibody production against small molecules using CNTs as vehicles has been reported. The production of antibodies displaying highaffinity and specificity to haptens is an important biotechnological research field because tailor-made binders can be used to develop immunoassays and biosensors for targets such as medicinal drugs, 100 pesticides, drugs of abuse, environmental contaminants, food additives, hormones, toxins, etc.…”
