Carbon Nanotubes in Cancer Therapy and Drug Delivery

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been introduced recently as a novel carrier system for both small and large therapeutic molecules. CNTs can be functionalized (i.e., surface engineered) with certain functional groups in order to manipulate their physical or biological properties. In addition to the ability of CNTs to act as carriers for a wide range of therapeutic molecules, their large surface area and possibility to manipulate their surfaces and physical dimensions have been exploited for use in the photothermal… Show more

“…46 Nanotubes can, for example, deliver therapeutic molecules and DNA; [47][48][49] however, without modifications on their structure, they can induce an immune response. 50 Nygaard and collaborators demonstrated that in mice, the adjuvant effect of particles on allergic immune responses increases with decreasing particle size and increasing particle surface area, and that CNTs promote allergic responses in mice. 45 In this way, researchers face the challenge of modifying CNT surface to avoid evoking immune responses and to promote successful regeneration as part of a scaffold.…”

“…5 Particularly, they are attractive as transporters for the delivery of biomolecules and drugs. 6 Through appropriate functionalization, CNTs have been used as nanocarriers to transport anticancer drugs, genes, and proteins for chemotherapy. They have also been used as mediators for photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) to directly destroy cancer cells.…”

“…The CNTs formed are already functionalized and can be used directly in various applications like targeted drug delivery. In targeted drug delivery, CNTs need to be functionalized so that drug should be attached with it (Bianco et al 2005;Elhissi et al 2012).…”
