Carbon monoxide enhances salt tolerance by nitric oxide‐mediated maintenance of ion homeostasis and up‐regulation of antioxidant defence in wheat seedling roots

Abstract: Salt stress induced an increase in endogenous carbon monoxide (CO) production and the activity of the CO synthetic enzyme haem oxygenase (HO) in wheat seedling roots. In addition, a 50% CO aqueous solution, applied daily, not only resulted in the enhancement of CO release, but led to a significant reversal in dry weight (DW) and water loss caused by 150 mM NaCl treatment, which was mimicked by the application of two nitric oxide (NO) donors sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and diethylenetriamine NO adduct (DETA/NO).… Show more

“…Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP), purchased from Sigma (St Louis, MO, USA), were used as the H 2 S or HS -and NO donor, respectively (Zhao et al 2001;Xie et al 2008;Wang et al 2010). 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide potassium salt (cPTIO) was used as the specific NO scavenger (Xie et al 2008;Besson-Bard et al 2009).…”

“…Recent studies in plants demonstrated that HO contributes to alleviating the effects of salt stress. These studies found that the activity of HO was induced due to oxidative stress under salinity conditions (Zilli et al, 2008(Zilli et al, , 2009Xie et al, 2008Xie et al, , 2011Wei et al, 2013). …”

“…In recent past, an increase in BV due to HO1 induction in soybean plants under cadmium and salt stress (Balestrasse et al, 2005(Balestrasse et al, , 2008Zilli et al, 2009) was thought to be an antioxidant response to oxidative stress. Earlier studies also indicated that HO substantially contributes to alleviate the effect of salt stress (Zilli et al, 2009;Xie et al, 2008 and.…”
