Carbon‐glass reinforced epoxy hybrid composites for crashworthy structural applications

Abstract: The goal of this work is to experimentally explore the crashworthiness performance and the deformation history of hybrid thin‐walled composite tubes. Glass (G)/carbon (C) reinforced epoxy circular specimens were prepared by wet wrap using hand lay‐up technique and then subjected to quasi‐static axial compressive loads to examine the impact of the hybridization process and stacking sequences on the crashworthiness performance and the deformation history. Crush indicators, that is, the initial peak force (normal… Show more

“…Kemapoxy 150 RGL was chosen as a matrix. Kemapoxy 150 RGL has been successfully applied in the literature [53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60] because it is distinguished by a strong resilience to chemical and mechanical properties. Table 2 shows the physical and mechanical properties of Kemapoxy 150 RGL given by the supplier.…”

“…FMLs are primarily intended for use in aerospace-related industries and are intended to improve the durability and impact strength of structural elements. 1,2 These laminates are useful for enhancing the lifespan and performance of parts because of their unique material, which integrates the strength of metals alongside the low-weight and resilient qualities of composites. 3 The extensive use of aluminum in FMLs is notably exemplified by glass laminate aluminum reinforced epoxy (GLARE), 4 a commercially significant composite.…”

“…[4][5][6] Crashworthiness is all about energy absorption through controlled failure mechanisms and modes that enable the sustainability of a gradual decline in the load profile during the energy absorption process. [7][8][9] According to Baroutaji et al 10 the vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of death worldwide, as they are responsible for more than 1.3 million fatalities and around 39 million injuries annually. Consequently, vehicle structural integrity (Crashworthiness) has gained more attention in academic design research and the automotive industry to prevent injury and ensure the safety of occupants in the event of a collision.…”
