Carbon and Oxygen Isotope Ratios of Marbles From Some Ancient Quarries of Western Anatolia and Their Archaeological Significance

Abstract: S 13C/12C and 18O/16O ratios have been measured for 42 marbles from the main quarry localities of archaeological interest of Western Anatolia (Marmara, Ephesos, Aphrodisias, Denizli and Afyon) in order to test the possibility of isotopically characterizing ancient marbles from this region. The various groups of samples are not clearly distinguishable on a δ13C‐δ18O diagram. However, if only white or slightly coloured samples are considered, the isotopic method appears to be much more selective.

“…Stable C and O isotopes have proved to be a suitable tool to understand the genesis of travertine (Friedman 1970;Manfra et al 1976;Turi 1986), and the provenance of its source fluid (Minissale et al 2002). Theoretically, information on the fractionation factors in the CO 2 -CaCO 3 -H 2 O system allows to the calculation of the δ 18 O and δ…”

“…This implies partial U loss, resulting in excess 230 Th unsupported by 234 U decay. Although the calibration method was designed to minimize the error caused by the uncertainty in decay constant for 230 Th and 234 U, the age of the samples is close to secular equilibrium and therefore strongly affected by error 2000), Fritz (1965), Manfra et al (1976) and Minissale (2004 magnification. Another factor complicating the interpretation of the data is the uncertainty in the correction for a possible contribution of non-radiogenic (initial/detrital) 232 Th, as the assumed bulk-Earth values may not be applicable to these samples.…”

“…Much more attention has been paid to studies of geochemical processes connected with sedimentation of tufas and travertines (Gonfiantini,134 Anna Pazdur, Mieczyslaw F Pazdur, andJoachim Szulc Panichi & Tongiorgi,1968;Friedman,1970;Usdowski, Hoefs & Menschel, 1979;Demovic, Hoefs & Wedepohl, 1972;Manfra, Masi & Turi, 1976;Buccino et al, 1978;D'Argenio et al, 1983). Calcareous tufas and travertines connected with Devonian, Lower Carboniferous, Jurassic or Cretaceous limestones and marls occur at many sites in southern Poland, especially in the Cracow-Wielun Upland.…”

“…Esta especie ha sido encontrada en el Pleistoceno Medio-Superior de los depósitos italianos de Piànico-Sèllere (Sordelli, 1873;Moscariello, et al, 2000) y Lazio (Clerici, 1887;Manfra, et al, 1976). El boj forma parte también de la flora del interglacial MIS 7 de Bilzingsleben (Harmon, et al, 1980;Mania, 2006).…”
