Direct information on the isotopic composition and timing of the now-vanished Laurentide glacier can be found in subglacial calcite or in early diagenetic concretions from glaciolacustrine deposits. Th/U isotopic measurements on early diagenetic concretions frome Lake Deschaillons varves (St. Lawrence Lowland, Québec) date the early Wisconsinan major ice advance at ca. 80,000 yr (isotopic stage 5a/4 transition). Significant retreat occurred at ca. 46,000 yr (isotopic stage 3) as indicated by Th/U isochrones on early diagenetic concretions from Lake Gayhurst varves in the Appalachian foothills of Québec. During the maximum extension of the ice, which is dated at ca. 22,000 yr by Th/U measurements on subglacial calcite at Cantley (northern margin of the St. Lawrence Lowland), δ18O values (vs PDB) ranging from −16/−19‰ (surficial ice) to ca. −30‰ (basal ice) are inferred for the Laurentide ice isotopic composition. Superimposition of two phases of carbonate precipitation does not prevent the establishment of their respective age and isotopic composition through correlation of independent parameters and calculation of mixing lines.

Relief majeur des Appalaches estriennes, l’intrusif du mont Mégantic constitue un repère précieux dans la reconstitution de l’évolution géomorphologique de cette partie de la plateforme par suite de l’âge crétacé de sa mise en place. L’examen des relations entre les formes développées dans l’intrusion et les caractéristiques lithologiques et minéralogiques de celle-ci conduit à conclure au rôle majeur de ces dernières dans l’élaboration du relief résiduel. Sa morphogénèse se place au Cénozoïque dans le contexte climatique généralement humide déterminé par le développement de l’Atlantique Nord. Elle se relie à l’évolution générale tectono-eustatique de la marge océanique des Appalaches septentrionales depuis le Crétacé plutôt qu’à des mouvements tectoniques localisés. Les séquences de creusement et de remblaiement des vallées principales voisines, se poursuivant jusqu’au Quaternaire, contribuent au caractère polyphasé de la surface d’érosion du plateau appalachien dominé par la montagne où la part des paléotopographies est discrète.This major relief feature of the Eastern Townships Appalaches is considered as an important landmark in the geomorphological evolution of this area because of the Cretaceous age of the intrusion setting. The landforms of the residual relief are mainly determined by the petrological and mineralogical properties of the constituing rocks. The morphogenesis took place in the Cenozoic humid climatic conditions which were induced by the North Atlantic Ocean evolution, and was ruled by the post-Cretaceous tectono-eustatic events of the Northern Appalaches continental margin rather than by local tectonic movements. The neighbouring Appalachian plateau is defined as a polyphased erosion surface repeatedly shaped by cutting and filling episodes including Quaternary sequences. However the mountain bears scarce evidence of old topographies.Wichtiger Berg des östlichen Appalachen Gebirges, bildet die Bodenerhebung des Mont Mégantic ein wertvolles Merkzeichen zur Wiederherstellung der geomorphologischen Entwicklung dieses Teils der Plattform infolge seines Kreidealters. Die Landformen des residuellen Reliefs sind hauptsächlich auf die petrologischen und mineralogischen Eigenschaften des grundlegenden Gesteins zurückzuführen. Seine Morphogenese befindet sich im Tertiär im Kontext eines allgemein feuchten Klimas, durch die Entwicklung des Nordatlantischen Ozeans bestimmt. Sie verbindet sich mehr mit der allgemeinen tectono-eustatischen Entwicklung des ozeanischen Randes der nördlichen Appalachen seit dem Kreidealter, als mit lokalen tectonischen Bewegungen. Die benachbarten Täler der Appalachen Plattform weisen auf eine mehrphasige Evolution der Erosionsfläche welche wiederholterweise durch Vertiefung und Auffüllung, die bis ins Quaternär fortsetzte, gestaltet wurde. Der Berg zeigt jedoch wenig Beweise von alten Topographien

The discovery of striated calcareous concretions in the Gentilly Till supports the hypothesis of an early episode of carbonate precipitation in a glaciolacustrine environment that occurred before the St. Lawrence Lowlands became covered by the last ice advance. Finite 14C ages have been obtained on two such concretions. These ages are in agreement with several others obtained previously on concretions from Lake Deschaillons varves. They suggest a maximum age of ca. 35 000 BP for the Gentilly Till deposition. Inasmuch as the underlying St. Pierre sediments have been dated at ca. 75 000 BP, the St. Lawrence Lowlands would have been ice-free during a large part of the Wisconsinan stage.
