The purpose of this study is to outline a common mistake made when the rate of oxidation of exogenous substrates during prolonged exercise is computed using 13C naturally labeled substrates. The equation proposed and commonly used in the computation does not take into account that exercise and/or exogenous substrate ingestion modifies the composition of the mixture of endogenous substrates oxidized and, consequently, the isotopic composition of CO2 arising from oxidation of endogenous substrates. The recovery of 13C and the amount of exogenous substrate oxidized are thus overestimated. An adequate procedure for the computation of exogenous substrate oxidation taking into account changes in isotopic composition of CO2 arising from oxidation of endogenous substrates is suggested. Results from a pilot experiment (4 subjects) using this procedure indicate that over 2 h of exercise (66% of maximal O2 uptake), with ingestion of 60 g of glucose, 39 +/- 4 g of glucose were oxidized. Estimates made without taking into account changes in isotopic composition of CO2 arising from oxidation of endogenous substrates range between 70 +/- 8 and 44 +/- 3 g depending on 1) the isotopic composition of exogenous glucose and 2) the isotopic composition of expired CO2 taken as reference (rest or exercise without glucose ingestion). These observations suggest that results from previous studies of exogenous substrate oxidation during exercise using 13C labeling should be used with caution.
Le relèvement glacio-isostatique décroît de 6,5 cm/an vers 6.000 ans 14C BP à 1,1 cm/an aujourd'hui.
Past sea-surface conditions over the northern North Atlantic during the last glacial maximum were examined from the study of 61 deep-sea cores. The last glacial maximum time slice studied here corresponds to an interval between Heinrich layers H2 and H1, and spanning about 20-16 ka on a 14C time scale. Transfer functions based on dinocyst assemblages were used to reconstruct sea-surface temperature, salinity, and sea-ice cover. The results illustrate extensive sea-ice cover along the eastern Canadian margins and sea-ice spreading, only during winter, over most of the northern North Atlantic. On the whole, much colder winter prevailed, despite relatively mild conditions in August (10-15°C at most offshore sites), thus suggesting a larger seasonal contrast of temperatures than today. Lower salinity than at present is reconstructed, especially along the eastern Canadian and Scandinavian margins, likely because of meltwater supply from the surrounding ice sheets. These reconstructions contrast with those established by CLIMAP on the basis of planktonic foraminifera. These differences are discussed with reference to the stratigraphical frame of the last glacial maximum, which was not the coldest phase of the last glacial stage. The respective significance of dinocyst and foraminifer records is also examined in terms of the thermohaline characteristics of surface waters and the vertical structure of upper water masses, which was apparently much more stratified than at present in the northern North Atlantic, thus preventing deep-water formation.
Arctic sea ice is a critical component of the climate system, known to influence ocean circulation, earth's albedo, and ocean-atmosphere heat and gas exchange. Current developments in the use of IP 25 (a sea ice proxy with 25 carbon atoms only synthesized by Arctic sea ice diatoms) have proven it to be a suitable proxy for paleo-sea ice reconstructions over hundreds of thousands to even millions of years. In the NE Baffin Bay, off NW Greenland, Melville Bugt is a climate-sensitive region characterized by strong seasonal sea ice variability and strong melt-water discharge from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS). Here, we present a centennial-scale resolution Holocene sea ice record, based on IP 25 and open-water phytoplankton biomarkers (brassicasterol, dinosterol and HBI III) using core GeoB19927-3 (73° 35.26′ N, 58° 05.66′ W). Seasonal to ice-edge conditions near the core site are documented for most of the Holocene period with some significant variability. In the lower-most part, a cold interval characterized by extensive sea ice cover and very low local productivity is succeeded by an interval (~ 9.4-8.5 ka BP) with reduced sea ice cover, enhanced GIS spring melting, and strong influence of the West Greenland Current (WGC). From ~ 8.5 until ~ 7.8 ka BP, a cooling event is recorded by ice algae and phytoplankton biomarkers. They indicate an extended sea ice cover, possibly related to the opening of Nares Strait, which may have led to an increased influx of Polar Water into NE-Baffin Bay. The interval between ~ 7.8 and ~ 3.0 ka BP is characterized by generally reduced sea ice cover with millennial-scale variability of the (late winter/early spring) ice-edge limit, increased open-water conditions (polynya type), and a dominant WGC carrying warm waters at least as far as the Melville Bugt area. During the last ~ 3.0 ka BP, our biomarker records do not reflect the late Holocene 'Neoglacial cooling' observed elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere, possibly due to the persistent influence of the WGC and interactions with the adjacent fjords. Peaks in HBI III at about ~ 2.1 and ~ 1.3 ka BP, interpreted as persistent ice-edge situations, might correlate with the Roman Warm Period (RWP) and Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA), respectively, in-phase with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) mode. When integrated with marine and terrestrial records from other circum-Baffin Bay areas (Disko Bay, the Canadian Arctic, the Labrador Sea), the Melville Bugt biomarker records point to close ties with high Arctic and Northern Hemispheric climate conditions, driven by solar and oceanic circulation forcings.
The purpose of this study was to compare the oxidation of 13C-labeled glucose, fructose, and glucose polymer ingested (1.33 g.kg-1 in 19 ml.kg-1 water) during cycle exercise (120 min, 53 +/- 2% maximal O2 uptake) in six healthy male subjects. Oxidation of exogenous glucose and glucose polymer (72 +/- 15 and 65 +/- 18%, respectively, of the 98.9 +/- 4.7 g ingested) was similar and significantly greater than exogenous fructose oxidation (54 +/- 13%). A transient rise in plasma glucose concentration was observed with glucose ingestion only. However, plasma insulin levels were similar with glucose and glucose polymer ingestions and significantly higher than with water or fructose ingestion. Plasma free fatty acid and glycerol responses to exercise were blunted with carbohydrate ingestion. However, fat utilization was not significantly different with water (82 +/- 14 g), glucose (60 +/- 3 g), fructose (59 +/- 11 g), or glucose polymer ingestion (60 +/- 8 g). Endogenous carbohydrate utilization was significantly lower with glucose (184 +/- 22 g), glucose polymer (187 +/- 31 g), and fructose (211 +/- 18 g) than with water (239 +/- 30 g) ingestion. Plasma volume slightly increased with water ingestion (7.4 +/- 4.5%), but the decrease was similar with glucose (-7.6 +/- 5.1%) and glucose polymer (-8.2 +/- 4.6%), suggesting that the rate of water delivery to plasma was similar with the two carbohydrates.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
