Carbofuran Degradation by Biogenic Manganese Oxides

Abstract: This work studied the effect of biogenic manganese oxides (Bio-MnO) on carbofuran degradation. The results showed that 21.05 % and 90.63 % carbofuran, respectively, were degraded in 4 days by Bio-MnO with and without NaN at initial pH 4.80, whereas carbofuran was hardly degraded by chemical manganese oxides in the same condition. Bio-MnO promoted carbofuran hydrolysis by changing the pH of the environment and encouraged carbofuran phenol cleavage by its oxidization. Both the oxidation of carbofuran phenol by Bi… Show more

“…Our results suggest that strain OF001 and A210 might be able to remove different organic pollutants by a coupled mechanism involving specific enzymatic activity and unspecific oxidation by the reactive manganese species, as has been observed for the removal of phenolic compounds, which are common wastewater pollutants [ 110 ]. Moreover, it seems likely that the MOB described in this study transform other organic compounds like carbofuran, ciprofloxacin, and 17α-ethinylestradiol, similar to other MOB [ 30 , 111 , 112 ].…”

“…Amorphous bioMnOx is more reactive than commercial MnO2. As an illustration, the data showed that MnO2 barely decomposed carbofuran, whereas MnOB indirectly degraded 90.63% of it under the same conditions [89]. Previous research has shown that the two reactions described by Equations ( 1) and ( 2) are commonly acknowledged as MOC degradation mechanisms.…”
