This paper deals with the calibration of diffusion-advection process models for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in a river of tropical country called Tucutunemo River, Venezuela. The novelties consist of the following aspects: 1) modeling of pesticides of type organochlorine including DDT and DRIN and their isomers such as: p.p'-DDT, o.p'-DDT, p.p'-DDD, p.p'-DDE, o.p'-DDE, Aldrin, Dieldrin, and Endrin. 2) Determination of parameters and statistical adjustment of diffusion and biochemical transformation coefficients in mathematical expressions derived from Fick's law, and modified equations from the biofilter reactors to simulate the attached biofilm on support medium to the attached biofilm on sediments in the river bed. Four scenarios are proposed for modeling: 1) molecular diffusion without biochemical transformation, 2) molecular diffusion with biochemical transformation, 3) advective diffusion without biochemical transformation, 4) advective diffusion with biochemical transformation.The combination of advective diffusion with biochemical transformation results in the best fit to explain the removal of the OCPs along the river.

Variation analysis of organochlorine pesticides in waters and sediments from a tropical river

In this paper, it is analyzed the temporal variation of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water and sediments from a river influenced by the activity in an agricultural field in a tropical country during the period 2013-2016. The novelty consists of increasing the studies of concentrations of OCPs in water and sediments of rivers for contributing to establish thresholds of concentrations that allow to protect the biota in soils and waters. The mean values of the OCPs dissolved in water and sorbed on sediments varied as follows: p.p'-DDT (0.001 – 0.022 μg.L-1), (0.1 – 8.24 μg.kg-1), o.p'-DDT (0.001-0.021 μg.L-1), (0.51 – 5.76 μg.kg-1), p.p'-DDD (0.001-0.01 μg.L-1), (0.14 – 1.96 μg.kg-1), p.p'-DDE (0.001-0.027 μg.L-1), (0.52 – 7.32 μg.kg-1), o.p'-DDE (0.001-0.041 μg.L-1), (0.2 – 5.52 μg.kg-1), Aldrin (0.004-0.053 μg.L-1), (0.23 – 8.22 μg.kg-1), Dieldrin (0.001-0.032 μg.L-1), (1.13 – 6.82 μg.kg-1) and Endrin (0.001-0.008 μg.L-1), (1.16 – 7.60 μg.kg-1). The management of OCPs by the activity in the agricultural field is being controlled.

An approach to models for transport and transformation of organochlorine pesticides in rivers

This paper constitutes a novel proposal for predicting the accumulation–utilization rate for transport of the organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) as well as the kinetic coefficients of biodegradation of OCPs dissolved in water and sorbed on sediments in tropical rivers. Eight OCPs were determined in waters and sediments in the dry and rainy seasons from 2013 to 2016. The biochemical transport and transformation model was proposed in two directions, along the river false(∂COCP/∂xfalse)$({\partial {C_{{\rm{OCP}}}}/\partial x} )$, and across the river (direction z$z$), false(∂COCP/∂zfalse)$({\partial {C_{{\rm{OCP}}}}/\partial z} )$, providing kinetic parameters linked to Monod's equation under a steady‐state condition for particulate and soluble OCPs, being useful for designing bioremediation techniques to restore water bodies.
