Aim: To identify the strategies used by nurses regarding the clinical management of breastfeeding; analyze the strategies used by nurses in the conduct of the clinical management of breastfeeding. Method: A descriptive, exploratory, qualitative study which was carried out in public hospitals of the 2 nd Metropolitan region of the State of Rio de Janeiro with 107 nurses working at the obstetric center, rooming and ward. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed according to the construction of thematic categories. Results: The clinical management of breastfeeding becomes evident like strategy used by nurses to promote breastfeeding and in management of complications and obstacles, allowing the growth of exclusive breastfeeding. Conclusion: In their professional practice, nurses contribute to the health and well-being of women, children and family, promoting skilled and specialized care in the clinical management of breastfeeding.
