The objective of this study was to evaluate the structural characteristics, dry matter production, residual mass, chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility of Iapar 61 black oat (Avena strigosa cv Iapar 61) pasture, both in isolation and in association with birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L., cv. St. Gabriel), under different forms of management in three growth cycles. A randomized block design was used with split plots in time with four treatments: conventional tillage oats, oat tillage, oats associated with birdsfoot trefoil and single birdsfoot trefoil, with three periods of evaluation and four replications. The apical meristem of oats increased from the first to the second cycle. The dry matter production of single birdsfoot trefoil was 579.65 kg on average, and the oats tillage production was 2597.78 kg. Oats exhibited high nutritional value before the first grazing in all treatments; however, at the end of its cycle, the association with birdsfoot significantly increased the crude protein content of the forage. The in vitro dry matter digestibility was similar between crops and decreased in the third cycle. Birdsfoot increased the nutritional value of oats at the end of the oat life cycle.

-The objective of this work was to evaluate the response of five birdsfoot trefoil populations (Lotus corniculatus L.), selected under severe and intense grazing (P38, P37, P9 and P3) or cutting (population Corte), one rhizomatous population from Morocco and two cultivars, São Gabriel (Brazil) and ARS 2620 (USA), to different cutting intervals (20 and 40 days). The trial was carried out in a greenhouse for 224 days. The plants were submitted to the treatments during four months, when it was made four and two cuttings for the 20 and 40 day intervals, respectively. In the following months, aerial part of the plants was totally removed and after 70 days of regrowth, evaluation of roots and aerial section were performed. Analysis of variance and multivariate analysis was performed, obtaining the Mahalanobis distance (Md), dendogram by UPGMA method and the relative contribution of the characters for genetic divergence. There was no genotype × cutting interval interaction and the genotypes presented a reduction on dry matter yield of roots, crown and aerial sections, number of stems and plant height when submitted to frequent cuttings. The most divergent genotypes were Marrocos and P9 (Md = 108.7) and the most similar ones were São Gabriel and P37 (Md = 7.8). The results suggest exclusion of the population P9 because of its weak performance and the utilization of the populations Corte and P37 as progenitors in the birdsfoot trefoil breeding program. Root dry matter accumulation and plant height were the characters that contributed most to genetic divergence and they can be used for selection works.

RESUMO -O experimento foi realizado com o objetivo de selecionar genótipos de Lotus corniculatus L. (Draco, SãoGabriel e UFRGS) mais tolerantes ao alumínio, utilizando-se a técnica de seleção em solução nutritiva. A solução continha 200 μmol/L de cálcio (CaCl 2 ), 100 μmol/L de alumínio (AlCl 3 ) e pH controlado na faixa de 4,1 a 4,3. Realizaram-se dois ciclos de seleção, nos quais as plântulas foram selecionadas pelo comprimento final das radículas. Posteriormente, avaliou-se o ganho genético alcançado nos ciclos de seleção, tanto nas populações originais como nas melhoradas, em um experimento com solução nutritiva com quatro concentrações de alumínio (0, 50, 100 e 150 μmol/L) (AlCl 3 ), por meio do crescimento radicular líquido. IntroduçãoOs solos ácidos são encontrados em grande parte do mundo, principalmente nas regiões tropicais e subtropicais úmidas, onde o volume considerável de chuvas e as temperaturas elevadas acabam acelerando o intemperismo. Nesses solos, o principal fator limitante é a presença de alumínio tóxico (Al 3+ ) em elevadas concentrações, que reduz o crescimento e a produtividade das plantas (Delhaize & Ryan, 1995).A redução na quantidade de alumínio pode ser realizada por meio de práticas de calagem, pois esse elemento é totalmente neutralizado quando o pH do solo é superior a 5,5 (Bohnen et al., 2006). Por outro lado, o uso de corretivos representa acréscimo nos custos de produção. Além disso, o alumínio não ocorre apenas na camada arável do solo, mas também em maiores profundidades, tornando difícil a realização dessa operação (Sousa et al., 2007).Outra forma de superar as dificuldades decorrentes da presença do Al 3+ no solo é a utilização de cultivares tolerantes (Foy et al., 1978), obtidos por meio da exploração do potencial genético de cada espécie. O uso desses materiais pode diminuir os custos de implantação e manutenção da cultura e permitir melhor desenvolvimento em situações de estresse hídrico, pois as plantas tolerantes apresentam melhor desenvolvimento do sistema radicular.
