Rules, formulas and statistical tests have been widely used in studies that use continuous variables in the normal or Gaussian distribution or other tests whose data fit this type of distribution (t and z distributions) and whose parameters can be defined. However, there are cases in which the model and goal of the scientific work allow only the use of discrete or nominal variables. The absence or presence of a structure or organ (muscles, nerves, blood vessels, bones, and ligaments), characteristics associated with these organs, such as the source of nerves, vessels and muscles and the distribution of nerves and vessels are discrete and / or nominal variables that do not fit the Gaussian distribution, nor of z or t, unless the measures of these structures are taken. A simple comparative method within the non-parametric distribution has been proposed, (1) between two different samples from the same species and (2) for two different species, based on the concepts of normal and variation in anatomy and on modal class in statistics here called Comparative Anatomy Index (IAC). The main findings on the use of this method are: (1) to allow the relationship between data from discrete or nominal variables in comparative anatomy or in other areas of morphology, (2) to generate an objective method (numerical) of comparison between samples of structures from the same species and between different species and (3) to fill the lack of a specific method for the statistical work in comparative anatomy or in morphology, in general.

Boars kept on commercial farms use their canine teeth as a mechanism of defense and attack in order to express their natural instincts, which could result in fractures of the teeth and jaws. Thus, utilizing local desensitization of the inferior alveolar nerve is crucial for executing therapeutic procedures in the oral cavities of those animals. Then, the goal is to carry out the morphometry of the mandibular foramen of that species, correlating it with the mandibular structures, while doing so in the safest manner for the animals. For that purpose, six hemimandibles of young-aged Sus scrofa scrofa were used, from which the proposed measurements were taken. On average, the lateral margin of the condylar process stood 142.43 mm away from the root of the lower medial incisive tooth. The longitudinal axis of the body of the mandible measured 22.3 mm at the level of the diastema that exists between the fourth lower premolar tooth and the first lower molar tooth. The mandibular foramen, from the caudal limit of the ventral margin, would be positioned at26.6 mm from the ventral margin of the angle of the mandible in that level, 34.92 mm away from the medial margin of the condylar process, and 38.63 mm away from the dorsal limit from the caudal margin of the coronoid process. The lack of statistically significant differences, and observing that the osseous accident under scrutiny had been positioned in the ramus of the mandible, indicated that the proposed procedure should be performed from the introduction of the needle in an oblique and rostrodorsal direction for 2.0 cm, and angulated at 60º with the anatomic reference created by the medial demarcation obtained via the support of the thumb on the lateral margin of the ramus of the mandible, ventrally to the zygomatic arch, all while preserving neighboring structures and establishing an unheard-of anesthetic methodology for boars.

Aceito para publicação em 12/03/2014 Resumo O Eira barbara é um mustelídeo de ampla distribuição na América latina vulgarmente conhecido como Papa-mel. Tendo em vista a carência de informações a respeito da anatomia dos mustelídeos, assim como a importância de um modelo vascular para a compreensão das lesões neurológicas no sistema nervoso central, este trabalho objetivou descrever a morfologia e a composição do circuito arterial da base do encéfalo do E. barbara fornecendo dados para estudos futuros. Para tal utilizou-se dois espécimes, machos, jovens, provenientes, da área de Mina Bauxita Paragominas-PA, doados após morte ao LaPMA. Os espécimes tiveram o sistema arterial preenchido com látex Neoprene 650 corado em vermelho e foram fixados em formaldeído 10% sendo posteriormente dissecados para sistematização dos vasos. Os animais estudados apresentaram o circuito arterial da base do encéfalo suprido pelas artérias carótidas internas e artéria basilar. A artéria carótida interna, após atravessar a dura-máter, continuou cranialmente emitindo as artérias cerebrais médias e terminando como artérias cerebrais craniais que se anastomosam fechando rostralmente o circuito arterial. As artérias comunicantes caudais integraram a artéria basilar ao circulo arterial e emitiram as artérias cerebrais caudais e cerebelares rostrais. A artéria basilar revelou como principais ramos, as artérias cerebelares médias e caudais.
